The Supreme Court has relaxed the ban imposed on the use of loud speakers for open air musical shows in the night following a case filed by a group of musicians.
The Three Judge Bench chaired by the Chief Justice has given this ruling. Accordingly permission has been granted for the use of loud speakers until 1.00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and until 12.30 a.m. on Sundays. The Supreme Court emphasized that the people should be allowed to enjoy their freedom since peace has returned to the country with the total elimination of terrorism in the island. The ban was imposed following a petition filed against noise pollution. The use of public address systems were banned from 10.00 p.m. until 6.00 a.m. the following day by a panel of judges including former Chief Justice Sarath N. De Silva.
