Law officers from around South Carolina are sharpening their crash investigation skills - by crashing something themselves.
The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia Wednesday is hosting a class on motorcycle crash investigation. Organizers say officers will crash a Honda motorcycle with a 150-pound test dummy.
Officers are learning how to calculate collision speeds, write a reconstruction report and prepare court testimony. The Criminal Justice Academy says it's the only agency in South Carolina that uses live crash testing to train its officers.
In 2007, officials say more than 100 people were killed in just over 2,100 motorcycle crashes in South Carolina. At that time, there were nearly 93,000 motorcycles registered in the state.
