Laws on transport of sand and earth relaxed

Laws related to the transport of sand and earth for purposes other than commercial needs have been relaxed. Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said that transport permits can be secured from the Divisional Secretary.

The Minister said it has been decided that permission will be granted for each Divisional Secretariat Division that not more than 100 cubes of sand can be mined and transported for a month. He revealed that any individual who required sand can secure a permit from the Divisional Secretary at the rate of Two Cubes per day. They can obtain these permits by making the required payment. The same conditions will also apply for earth. Permission will be granted for a person to transport 35 cubes of earth based on their requirements.

The Minister was addressing the media in Colombo today. The media briefing was summoned to give details of future plans of institutions coming under the Environment Ministry. The Minister referred to plans to grant legal relief with regard to the transport of timber. The handing over of machinery for the production of composed fertilizer and financial assistance took place under the patronage of the Minister.
