The No Confidence motion brought against the External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris by the UNP was defeated with a majority of 107 votes.
Parliamentarian John Amaratunge moved the Motion on behalf of the UNP. The vote was taken up after its debate. Only 32 UNP members cast their votes in favour of the No-Confidence motion. Members of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Tamil National Alliance were not present in the House when the vote was taken up. Muslim Congress members voted along with the Government, opposing the motion. 139 votes were cast against the No-Confidence motion. As a result it was defeated with a majority of 107 votes.
