Mould a generation able to raise the country to highest position – President

Oct 7, 2010 11:33:29 AM - itnnews.lk

President Rajapaksa has emphasized the need to mould a child generation who could raise the motherland to the highest position in the world, without sullying its image.

The President pointed out that everyone thinks that that education is a task of improving the knowledge, concepts and skills. He queried whether there had been a conceptual change in education. There is an opinion that the child receives a good education, when he attends a popular school which is equipped with all facilities. The President said that he recently saw in the newspapers that eleven of the 12 children of a very remote school had passed the Grade Five scholarship Examination. They did not possess library, auditoriums, computers, musical instruments, TV’s or any other facilities. The students had made this achievement due to the total dedication of the teachers, who had imparted knowledge to these children. He said the students should be moulded to give them the feeling that their motherland, won by the war heroes, is the best in the world, and that its image should not be tarnished. They should be given the feeling that they should care for and love the country.

The President was addressing a ceremony at the Bandaranaiake Vuidyalaya in Gampaha. It was organized to declare open the new swimming pool of the school. The expenditure incurred was 30 million rupees. The Swimming pool is an untiring effort of the school Principal the Ven. Labutale Sudassana thera, who sold his motor car and launched the fund for the building of the pool. Philanthropists and the Past Pupils Association also contributed to this task. Speaking further, the President opined that it is opportune to effect a conceptual change in the children. The President underscored that the onus is on the schools to build a child generation who respects Language and religion and considers that their country is the best in the world. Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Deputy Minister Pandu Bandaranaike were among the other speakers. Many Parliamentarians were present.
