Oct 9, 2010 5:13:38 AM - itnnews.lk

The Registrar General’s Department will introduce stringent laws to prevent marriages between minors. The Department said that it will remove such Registrars who violate laws during the registration of marriages and take legal action against them.

More than 20 Marriage Registrars have already been removed following the instructions given by the President in Polonnaruwa to stop marriages between minors, registered by producing false information.

The President said the girls in the age group of 13 and 14 have been married off and unmarried girls above the age of 15 are reported to be unavailable in the village of Welikanda. The reason behind is said to be the ability to obtain lands by the married persons. He stressed that these children cannot rear children themselves. He said that the marriages have been registered for a sum of 1000 rupees. The GAs and District Secretaries should look into these developments. He said that the Registrars should have been more responsible. The President directed to remove all such Registrars and take legal action against them.
