The sea and the Hambantota harbour have been connected altering the map of Sri Lanka.
The strip of land of the Matara Kataragama road that separated the Magampura Harbour and the Indian Ocean was removed by carrying out an explosion this morning. 300 metres of land near the 235th kilometer post is currently being removed. With the removal of this strip of land, the area belonging to the ‘Karagam Lewaya’ is being linked with the Indian Ocean. Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa and the Chairman of the Ports Authority Dr. Priyath Banduwickrema were present to witness the occasion.
In the first phase, the area is filled with 16 meters of water. The Harbour will be filled with more water after several more meters of earth will be removed.
