The passenger transport service in canal ways in the Colombo City is being expanded. The intention of this boat service is to preserve the inland water ways to support the tourism industry.
The boat service which was operative along the Kirulapone canal way from Wellawatte to Nawala has been extended to Battaramulla. Six boats which can each carry 10 passengers and a trawler which can accommodate 25 passengers are operative. The Sri Lanka Navy, including the Naval Commander, is in the process of expanding the service in the City’s water ways under the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
In addition, Special Canal Tour packages are also available for the recreation of the people. A life saving programme is also being launched for the safety of the passengers. A water sports festival was organized by the Sri Lanka Navy, under the theme “Promotion and preservation of inland water ways to popularize the boat service, a High Speed Boat Maneuver by the Rapid Action Boat Squadron of the Sri Lanka Navy.
