President Rajapaksa issues instructions to officials to take swift action to halt the sale of narcotics in the school environs. The President was addressing the Western Province Development Committee meeting.
The President pointed out that various types of drugs were sold in the environs of schools and the children have got into the habit of using them. It is very clear that this menace is rife particularly in the Gampaha District, in the Western Province. He said that action should be taken to overcome this situation. The Police should be geared to handle the situation. In addition the teachers and politicos should get involved in it. They should take action to make the places of religious worship aware of this situation.
The meeting was held at the Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya in Panadura today. Discussions centred at length on the progress of projects mooted in the Gampaha, Colombo and Kalutara Districts and the projects desired to be launched in future under the Mahinda Chinthana. The President also issued instructions for the immediate acquisition of unsuccessful projects within Investment Zones. Sri Lanka anticipates to stage the 2018 Commonwealth Games. If Sri Lanka were to successfully participate in the Games, the President opined that a reawakening in sports within the country was critical to mould a youth generation armed with skills. He said there should be a particular target when the games are being held in Sri Lanka. Necessary action should be initiated in this respect.
The President adverted his attention to many regional development projects which are launched haphazardly in the Western Province. He gave instructions to the officials to take swift measures to rectify them. Many Parliamentarians as well as the Western Province Governor, the Chief Minister and Provincial Councillors were present.
