Felling of trees has been prohibited in and around tea plantations in the Nuwara Eliya District. Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri said that the ban has been imposed with immediate effect.
The order has been issued by the Presidential Secretariat. The plantation companies resort to other cultivations in place of tea, causing environmental degradation. Many environmental issues have been created due to random felling of trees. Already a large number of trees are cut in plantations. Certain companies have sold the trees to timber mills and thereby earned a high income. The District Secretary said that there are complaints that none of the profits have been distributed amongst the plantation workers. Information about the new directive was provided to the Police and the Forest Conservation Department.
