The Foreign Employment Bureau says a majority of the Sri Lankan expatriate workers in Middle East are working in Saudi Arabia.
In 2009, 67,806 workers had left for Saudi Arabia. It amounts to 26 percent. In addition 51,840 persons had left for United Arab Emirates, 47,168 for Kuwait and 29,543 had left for Qatar. Foreign Employment Bureau reports indicate that foreign employment opportunities for Sri Lankans had grown 15 percent in the last few years. According to the reports, intervention of the Government on behalf of the workers’ rights had contributed towards this growth.
