Thai authorities have arrested more than 150 Sri Lankan Tamil migrants. Reports say that there were hardcore terrorists amongst them. Pictures of the terrorist leader has also been recovered from their possession.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the Canada Border Services Agency are believed to have played a role in the raid carried out by the Thai authorities. The National News Bureau of Thailand reported yesterday that Thai “commando units,” acting on “a tipoff” and “intelligence information,” raided 17 apartments in Bangkok’s northern suburbs.
The report said that they arrested 155 Sri Lankans whose ranks included “a number” of suspected Tamil tiger rebels. It further said that the authorities have found pictures of terrorist leader Prabhakaran among them. Those arrested lacked travel documents or had overstayed their visas, and were “waiting to seek asylum in a third country.
The migrants are now to be expedited en masse back to Sri Lanka. Meanwhile 492 Tamil refugees reached Canada last August aboard the Sun Sea vessel. The aim of the authorities is to prevent them from reaching the Canadian shores due to the difficulty in taking legal action against them.
