A senior governing party member of the local authorities has said that the proposed local government electoral reforms might boomerang on the ruling party at some point.
Chairman of the UPFA controlled Kaduwela Pradeshiya Sabha, G. H. Buddha has been quoted in the media saying that the ward system that was to be introduced under the proposed electoral reforms would have adverse effects on the SLFP which heads the UPFA today.
He has said the SLFP would have to give many slots to the small parties within the UPFA when choosing candidates and thereby lose its control over the alliance.
According to Buddhadasa, the proposed system would help the UNP which does not have a strong grassroots level leadership today.
He has explained that the UNP would be able to secure a viable grassroots level leadership in the form of candidates if the local government polls were conducted according to the ward system and the UNP would thereby gain a new lease of life.
