All eyes were on Chile as 33 miners entombed 2,000 feet below the surface in the San Jose’ mine in the Atacama region in Chile for 69 days were rescued and brought up to the surface yesterday in one of the great escapes in recorded history.
Though miners trapped in mines have been rescued earlier this is the first time that such a large number trapped for so long so far under the surface has been successfully rescued.
The miners were entombed in the lowest chambers of the mine when several thousand tons of rock collapsed as a result of an accident and blocked the entrance to the shaft on August 5, 2010.
