12 police officers who were injured due to the disturbance created by the Inter University Students Union near the Higher Education Ministry have been admitted to hospital.
The Students’ Union organized the protest against the action taken with regard to some students from the Peradeniya and Rajarata Universities who have been remanded on several charges.
They behaved in an unruly manner shouting slogans derogatory of the Minister, President and higher government officials while distributing hand bills. The slogans represented the requirements of a certain political group. They forcibly entered the Higher Education Ministry premises following the protest.
20 people including 12 police officers who were injured due to the pelting of stones thrown by the union activists while being dispersed have been hospitalized. Meanwhile several vehicles moving on the road were also damaged.
