A 57-year-old man who worked two jobs to support his family was shot and killed Wednesday night while taking out trash after closing time at a Batesburg-Leesville fast-food restaurant.
Willie Jennings was taking out the trash at a McDonald’s on West Columbia Avenue around 11:43 p.m., said Batesburg-Leesville Police Chief Wallace Oswald. Witnesses reported that two young men fired a gun at James and fled.
As police were traveling to the scene, Sgt. Eddie Turner noticed a car on a side street that had just turned on its lights, Oswald said. Turner called other officers to pursue that car while he continued traveling to the McDonald’s.
The clothes worn by an 18-year-old and a 21-year-old in the car matched descriptions given by witnesses, Oswald said. Those two men and a woman who was driving the car were being questioned by police on Thursday but had not been charged.
