University students remanded

The university student activists who were arrested yesterday under the charge of forcibly entering the Ministry of Higher Education and damaging state property have been remanded.

The Inter University Students Federation staged a protest opposite the Higher Education Ministry at Ward Place in Colombo, demanding the release of their activists who are already in remand custody. Thereafter the activists of the Inter University Students Federation who behaved in an unruly manner stormed into the Ministry by breaking the gates of the premises. Property and several vehicles were damaged due to attacks by the students who were leaving the Ministry after its forcible occupation. 20 persons including 12 Police Officers suffered injuries. 21 students of the Inter University Students Federation were apprehended. The Cinnamon Gardens Police produced them before the Colombo Chief Magistrate. They were ordered to be kept in remand custody till 29th of this month.
