Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka said that using the correct lighting could lead to savings amounting to Rs. 10 billion. Energy use could be cut by 12% as well, he said at a press conference today.
To this end, a rating system for flourescent lighting will be introduced, taking energy saving and eco-friendliness into account, Ranawaka revealed. Other equipment will be similarly rated, so that consumers will know how to cut down on electricity bills, he said.
In further good news, Ranawaka said there would not be an increase in electricity tariffs as the Ceylon Electricity Board’s financial position had been improved since he took up his post.
