The athletes who brought honour to Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games have returned to Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan athletes were able to win three medals – a Gold, a Silver and a Bronze at the 19th Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. Manju Wanniarachchi who won a Gold Medal in Boxing and Chinthana Widanage and Sudeh Peiris who won medals in weightlifting returned to the island this morning. Sports Minister C.B. Ratnayake and many senior officials of the Sports Ministry were present at the Bandaranaike International Airport to receive them.
Minister C.B. Ratnayake said that our athletes competed with the most talented and posed a challenge to them. He said that it is evident that Sri Lanka is ready to win medals in the future.
Manju Wanniarachchi said that he made a much commitment in training to achieve this position. He expressed his gratitude to the Sri Lankans. He said that he wanted to bring credit to the country by winning at the Commonwealth, SAARC, Asian and Olympic games. He has now completed one stage of this journey.
