The Defence Secretary has requested the Australian Government to take stringent action against Sri Lankan refugees who arrive in Australia.
Defence Secretary Gotabhya Rajapaksa made the request in an interview an Australian media channel. He said a person belonging to any community had the freedom to live anywhere in the country. As such there is no need for Sri Lankans to seek refugee status in another country.
The Defence Secretary pointed out that most refugees who arrive in Australia return to Sri Lanka after a short period of around two years. He therefore requested the Australian Government to take strict action against Sri Lankans who attempt to enter as refugees.
