Bail has been refused to the 21 undergraduates who are in remand custody for involvement in damaging Government property by entering the Higher Education Ministry.
These students were produced in the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today. Making submissions with regard to the bail application, counsels appearing on behalf of them said that some of the students had to sit examinations. As such they requested the granting of bail for them. Raising objections, the Cinnamon Gardens Police said that inquiries were still in progress in relation to the incident. As such, the Police said they strongly objected to enlarging the undergraduates on bail. Turning down the bail application, Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli said if the students needed to appear for the Examination, the request could be directed to the Prisons Superintendent and make appropriate arrangements.
