Protest On Police Attack On Journalists (Photos)

Oct 19, 2010 10:38:18 AM - thesundayleader.lk

A protest was held at noon today against the police attack on several journalists. The demonstration was held at Lipton Circus, and was attended by journalists and representatives from several media organisations, who held placards and chanted slogans demanding that legal action be taken against the officers behind the attack.

The incident occurred during the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) demonstration on October 14 last week. The students there were demanding that a group of young activists be released. They had been imprisoned after having booed Minister of Higher Education S B Dissanayake. During the protest, several journalists reported that the police was using undue force to break up the protest. Despite having identified themselves as journalists, the police allegedly assaulted them.

The IFJ reports that the five reporters injured were Bingun Menaka Gamage of Lankadeepa; Sandaruwan Yatikinda of Neth FM; Pradeep Dilrukshan from the Daily Mirror; Chamila Karunaratna from Rivira and Subramaniyam Gunaratnam of Sirasa TV.
