Parliament approves the extension of the Emergency with a majority of 99 votes. 118 members voted in favour while 19 votes were cast against it. A notable feature was the absence of UNP members during voting time.
Moving the Resolution in Parliament this afternoon, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne revealed of a programme mooted jointly by Interpol and the State Intelligence Services to rout the LTTE internationally. He underscored the need to extend the emergency by another month to further suppress terrorist activities worldwide. The Prime Minister opined that the Emergency should be strictly enforced for the proper maintenance of public security and to safeguard state property and assets. The Prime Minister told the House that Interpol and State intelligence services planned to moot a joint security programme with regard to terrorists who were attempting to revive the LTTE outfit internationally. He underlined that the Government was taking appropriate initiatives to rout the LTTE internationally.
