The Kalpitiya Police have raided an unauthorised Tamil
language radio station. The station identified as ‘ Shikaram’
and operated from a secret room in the Super Market
Complex in Kalpitiya town.
The clandestine radio station had operated sans a permit
from the telecommunications Regulatory Commission.
Police Media spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said
that the Kalpitiya Police had found a transmitter, sound
control equipment, a powerful antenna, two microphones,
two head phones, a lap top computer and fourteen CDs at
the location. Police arrested two suspects with Rs.4,000
in their possession. It had transpired that the radio station
had been broadcasting to an area within a radius of 15
kilometres between FM bands 96.1 – 96.2. It had broadcast
advertisements from local businessmen in Kalpitiya, and
charging Rs.1 000 per advertisement. The owner of the
radio station is believed to be from Vavuniya. Police Media
spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said that legal action
will be taken against the suspects. The suspects are to be
produced in the Puttalam District Court.
