The Archbishop of Colombo the Most Reverend Malcolm Ranjith has been elevated to Cardinal. Pope Benedict the XVI has made the appointment. Dr, Malcolm Ranjith is the only second Sri Lankan to be elevated to a Cardinal. The first was late His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray.
Dr. Malcolm Ranjith will also be the only Cardinal in the whole of South Asia. Due to the prominence within the Catholic Church’s hierarchy of his position as Archbishop of Colombo, His Lordship Malcolm Ranjith has been named a Cardinal in the next consistory, which is to be called by the Pontiff next month.
Expressing views to Prime TV on his elevation, he said he has been honoured by this appointment even though there are surely better persons than him. By chosing his the Pontiff has shown him a sign of his personal acceptance and honour to him. As such, he said he is thankful to His Holiness for this act and hoped that they would be able to help him with whatever they could.
