Columbia parks employee charged in kickback scheme

Oct 21, 2010 6:18:00 PM - thestate.com
A Columbia Parks and Recreation Department employee is facing charges for allegedly taking kickbacks from contractors working on city projects.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says 34-year-old Damon McDuffie was indicted Thursday on two counts of solicitation and receipt of illegal payments from contractors.

Prosecutors say McDuffie took kickbacks from contractors from October 2006 through January of this year for projects including the refurbishment of a bridge at Columbia's Riverfront Park.

If convicted, McDuffie could receive up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines for each count.

City officials told multiple media outlets McDuffie had been suspended without pay. It was not immediately clear if McDuffie had an attorney.
