Higher corn prices mean higher prices for meat

Oct 22, 2010 7:12:00 AM - thestate.com

With the cost of meat on the rise, now is the time to grab a Thanksgiving turkey and a holiday ham and pop them in the freezer.

It’s all about corn, experts say, which is a primary feedstock for beef and also is used to feed poultry and pork. And corn futures have soared close to a two-year high, experts say.

“Stock the freezer,” said Bill Sirakos, senior economist at Frost Bank in San Antonio. Higher priced corn “is going to raise the price of food — no question, and raise the price of cows, of beef — absolutely.”

The price of corn had been trending up before taking a leap Oct. 8, when the U.S. Agriculture Department slashed its estimate of U.S. corn production.
