South Carolinas unemployment rate in September slid slightly as schools hired more workers for the new year.
The states unemployment rate was 11 percent last month from a revised 11.1 percent in August and 12.2 percent from a year ago, the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce reported today.
The state rate was the nation's sixth highest last month.
South Carolinas jobless rate has fallen for much of this year from the all-time high set of 12.5 percent set in January. The rate fell as people left the work force or stopped looking for jobs. Unemployment figures count only those who are actively seeking jobs.
Bolstered by school hiring in September, employers added more workers in one month than they had since April.
