Minister Wimal Weerawansa recalled that Students Movements earlier launched struggles for genuine students’ rights. However, today it was not so.
The Minister said that struggles were being staged at present on behalf of political thuggery. Addressing a ceremony organized for the distribution of housing assistance to low income families of the Matara District, the Minister referred to a student group in Sri Lanka’s history which battled to save the ration book. They also fought for free education. Today political leaders have launched a students’ movement which attacks the Vice Chancellor. He said that the parents send their children to Universities not to mould a group which assaults the Vice Chancellor. He also recalled that the only problem that could not be sorted out was the issue with Prabhakaran. However, this too has been solved. But today any problem may be that of the students, the public or the working class can be resolved through negotiations. The country today had a Head of State who gives an ear to the public. Mr Weerawansa emphasized that the country was now moving towards a new chapter.
