The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) will be able to provide a new system that enables the public to obtain electricity on a pre-paid basis in future.
The public will be able to check the current electricity bill and pay the bill on-line using this system, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.
Addressing a press briefing held at the Power and Energy Ministry yesterday Minister Ranawaka said that a new tariff is to be introduced from January next year based on the recommendations of the Public Utilities Commission. The cost of generating electricity will go down from 2012 and then the CEB will be able to provide electricity to the public at a low price.
At the moment one unit of electricity costs Rs.26 and it will be around Rs.9 by then.
At the moment the percentage of people who do not have electricity is 15 percent.
The current demand for the electricity will go up five fold by 2030.
