Sports Ministry Head of Sports Medicine Dr Geethanjan Mendis yesterday expressed his confidence that they could prove Manjula Wanniarachchi innocent despite the boxer been tested positive for the performance enhancing steroid nandrolone.
The 30 year old pugilist defeated Welshman Sean McGoldrick in the Commonwealth Games bantam weight 56kg category to clinch a gold medal for his country after a lapse of 72 years.
Dr Mendis stated that his team would perform every possible act to protect Manjula Wanniarachchi from further humilation and to retain his gold medal which brought a great amount of honour and pride to the nation.
Dr Mendis revealed that they would appeal to the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee following a ‘B’ sample test which is expected to take place later this week.
Manjula Wanniarachchi will leave for New Delhi in a couple of day’s time accompanied by a doctor and team manager.
