Barren land to be cultivated with tea

Oct 26, 2010 6:52:11 AM - itnnews.lk

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has said that barren land will be given to unemployed youth to cultivate tea. The Minister stressed that the Government hopes to produce quality tea through the Tea Shakthi Programme.

He said that factories were setup to set an example to the private sector. The Tea Shakthi programme was launched to maintain a standard. He noted that this standard should be maintained today even though it is a little late. He said that he will introduce laws to make it compulsory for the producers to provide at least 60% of quality tea leaves.

The Minister was addressing a meeting held to discuss the problems related to the Tea Small Holders at Hapugastalawa in Nawalapitiya. A good demand exists for the Sri Lankan tea from countries such as Russia. The Minster pointed out that all should strive to export quality teas. The SLFP organizer of Kotmale Kumara Dassanayake was amongst those who participated in the occasion.
