A rotten odor wafted through downtown Columbia on Tuesday, leading public officials on a wild goose chase to find the source and giving city residents comic material.
Reports of the odor drifted in from Hampton Farms off Garners Ferry Road, the Vista, Five Points and near Williams-Brice Stadium as late as 6:30 Tuesday evening.
Neighbors in the Hollywood-Rose Hill neighborhood sent a flurry of e-mails speculating that someone fertilized camellias with uncomposted manure. Those e-mails captured City Councilwoman Belinda Gergels attention, who said she was on smell patrol.
You know exactly what theyre saying it smells like, Gergel said. And its not marijuana.
