Mahesh Kumar, the fisherman lost at sea for months and rescued by the Maldivian coast guard on October 20th, returns to the island.
K.D. Mahesh set sail from Beruwala on board ‘Dinush Putha 2′ with four other fishermen when they ran into trouble as their boat developed engine problems. They had lost all contacts with land after June 16 and on October 20 the Maldivian coastguard came across the boat adrift about 350 nautical miles from Male. However, only Mahesh was found on board the vessel as all four other fishermen had died due to lack of food and water. Officials at the Sri Lankan High Commission in the Maldives made all arrangements to send back the rescued Sri Lankan fisherman, back to the island. The aircraft carrying the fisherman arrived in the island this morning. Mahesh Kumar said that he was in good health.
