A man was convicted today of conspiring to kill the former President Chandrika Kumaratunge in a suicide bomb attack. He was sentenced to 30 years of hard labor.
The Former President survived the attack at an election rally in December 1999. The Colombo High Court sentenced the defendant, Sakthivel Ilankesvaran to 30 years rigorous imprisonment. The Attorney General had filed the case against him under 28 charges. He had pleaded guilty to the charges. Delivering the judgement, High Court Judge M.P.D. Warawewa said it had been proven that the accused had planned the assassination conspiracy and he was convicting him. 28 others were killed and scores were wounded in the attack.
