Clemson breaking ground on wind turbine facility

Oct 28, 2010 4:06:00 AM - thestate.com
Clemson University is breaking ground on a nearly $100 million center to study wind energy, a facility that could mean thousands of new jobs for South Carolina.

Lawmakers and university officials gather at the old Charleston Naval Base in North Charleston on Thursday to launch the project.

Last year, the federal Energy Department gave Clemson $45 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The state and private donors provided another $53 million.

The center to test drive trains for wind turbines will be part of Clemson's Restoration Institute campus at the old base. A drive train takes energy generated by a turbine's blades and drives electrical generators.
