A week of commemoration is planned to mark the beginning of the President’s second term of office. Addressing a special media briefing, Minister Ratnasiri Wickremasinghe said the commemoration week will be organized granting a news access to the people as well as development of the country.
Mnister Wickremanayake noted that the programme is being drawn up to hold the function as a national ceremony sans politics giving an opportunity for anyone to participate. He said that finally they had decided to hold the ceremony opposite the Presidential Secretariat. A six-day programme has been formulated to commemorate the event. He revealed that it would commence on the 15th of next month.
There are more programmes planned for the commemoration week which will commence on the 15th of next month with the “Deyata Sevana” national tree planting campaign. It is targeted to plant over 1.1 million trees. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told the journalists that It will be purely a programme which will be beneficial to the country.
He pointed out that the Nidahasa Exhibition will be held from the 17th to the 20th of next month at the Independence Square. An Ocean Pirith will be held from the Galle Harbour to the Hambantota Harbour. The opening of the Hambantota Harbour will also take place during this commemoration week. Several commemoration programmes are also planned at the rural level.
