Feds: Sprinklers would contain fatal SC fire

A federal study concludes sprinklers on the loading dock of a Charleston furniture store would have contained a fire that killed nine firefighters in 2007.
The Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology also found the large open display space and large quantities of flammable furniture increased the spread of the flames at the Sofa Super Store.
The long-awaited report released Thursday also found the flames would not have spread so rapidly if national fire safety codes had been in place.
A rapid rush of air into the building after firefighters broke out several showroom windows also fed the fire. But investigator Nelson Bryner said by the time that was done, conditions in the building were already untenable for the firefighters.
