North Charleston City Council has given final approval to casino boat operations.
Multiple media outlets reported operations could begin in 90 days.
At least eight companies have shown interest in operating from the old Navy Base and Shipyard. Mayor Keith Summey says there might be only two operators.
Some residents have complained about the city being responsible for potential growth in gambling problems. But Summey says the boats will be just another choice for entertainment.
the city is considering two ways to make money. One would have boat owners pay 10 percent of ticket costs to the city, plus 5 percent of proceeds. The other would have the boats pay the city a flat $7 for each passenger.
