The Bengal tiger cub that was born a week ago at the Dehiwela zoo died today.
The National Zoological Gardens Unit Director, Bashwara Gunaratne said that a post-mortem is being carried out to determine the cause of death. Veterinary surgeon, Dr. Jagath Jayasekara said that the cause of death is likely due to the fact that the cub did not receive natural milk from the mother, who rejected the tiger cub. He said that the anti-bodies named chlostrum which cannot be produced artificially, are necessary for a new born. He said if they do not receive it, this type of situation is likely. Right now we assume that this is the cause,” he said.
