The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition filed by Sarath Fonseka challenging the results of the 2010 Presidential Election.
The five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Ashoka de Sukva took up the petition today. A large group including government as well as opposition politicos and Scholars gathered at the Supreme Court Complex to witness the hering. Respondents including the President, raising objections said that the petition had not been filed in conformity to accepted strategies. Accepting the objections, the five member bench dismissed the petition sans a trial.
Mr. Fonseka had filed this petition calling for the nullification of the last Presidential election and holding another election. However, from the beginning it was mentioned in Courts that the petition had not been filed adhering to proper strategies. Taking into consideration the basic detailed objections raised by the counsels of the petitioner, the petition was quashed today.
