Urgent measures are being taken to control irregularities with regard to drugs. Minister Maithrispala Sirisena has said that he will attempt to introduce a Parliamentary Act in this connection.
The Minister said certain officials were arrested recently after recovering drugs in Government health units at private pharmacies. The normal practice was to impose a small fine when a case is filed against such an offence. He said a clear decision has been taken to cancel the licenses of those pharmacies. Amendments will be presented in Parliament next year to increase the fines. The Minister said that in case drugs from government healthcare centres will be found in a private pharmacy the concerned officials will be sentenced to serve prison terms.
The Minister made these observations while addressing the Annual Conference of the Drug Distributors. It was organized by the State Pharmaceutical Corporation and State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation. New Pharmacy and Company in Kurunegala received the award for Best Sales Agent while United Pharmacy in Galle won the award for the Best Wholesale agent. A book authored by Prof. Colvin Gunaratne was also launched.
