A programme has been mooted to further expand the cultivation of cinnamon.
Cinnamon is making a sufficient contribution to the national income as a minor export crop. The Agriculture Department has unveiled a programme to expand its cultivation. Under the first stage, plans are afoot to bring 1000 acres under cinnamon cultivation in the Galle District. The handing over of 500 thousand cinnamon plants and a financial grant to those who are interested in cultivation took place under the patronage of Chief Minister Shan Wijelal de Silva. The plants distributed were of the Cinnamon Research Centre.
