Foods containing high sugar levels, Chewing betel, smoking and poor oral hygiene have a direct effect on the most common oral diseases such as oral cancer, gum disease and tooth decay. According to research conducted so far, 90 percent of the population in Sri Lanka suffer from some type of oral disease. The Health Ministry under the guidance of Minister Maitreepala Sirisena has launched several programmes to improve oral health by extending school dental services and carrying out awareness programmes.
