The President held discussions with Nepali President Ram Baran Yadav in Shanghai today taking another step in the direction of South Asian regional cooperation.
A special feature of the discussions was the request made by the Nepali President from his Sri Lankan counterpart to intervene in defusing the political crisis in his country. The President has intervened to settle a political crisis in Nepal during a previous occasion as well. They focused on improving friendship and trade cooperation. The Nepali President called for strengthening of the close religious relations between the two countries. The President recalled that the proposal to renovate Lumbini in Nepal was tabled in Parliament 40 years ago when he was a young Parliamentarian. He pledged to extend maximum support to carry out the programme.
Today is the final day of China’s Expo-2010 international exhibition. A conference was held this morning to mark the occasion with the participation of the invited dignitaries. Several heads of state including President Rajapaksa and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon were present at the inaugural ceremony. Attention was focussed on President Rajapaksa as the leader who steers the country towards development after releasing it from terrorism.
