The government has reduced the Special Commodity Levy on the import of potatoes and big onions with immediate effect. The aim is to provide potatoes and big onions to the consumers at reasonable prices.
Trade Secretary Anura Siriwardena said the import tax on potatoes and big onions was reduced during the weekend. The tax of 30 rupees imposed on potatoes has been reduced to 10 rupees while the import tax of 25 rupees on big onions has been reduced also to 10 rupees.
Accordingly the tax imposed on potatoes has been reduced by 20 rupees while the tax on big onions has been reduced by 15 rupees. He said the measure has been taken to grant relief to the consumers on the instructions of the President. He said that a decline in the price of these commodities will be evident during this week.
