Members of the Inter University Student’s Federation met with JVP leaders yesterday (31).
The meeting was said to be part of an IUSF initiative to enlighten parties and other organisations of the issues facing the educational sector within the country.
JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe reportedly charged that there was a Government conspiracy to destroy free education within the country. He pointed out that since the current Minister had taken up his portfolio there had been numerous problems in almost every university.
Acting Convenor IUSF Susantha Bandara told the media that 29 student leaders, including IUSF Convenor Udul Premaratne, were in custody. He added that even to attend a funeral, permission had to be obtained from 7 people, a week prior to the funeral itself.
“…what exists in universities today is an environment that is not conducive to free study, hold cultural events or to have love affairs. Hence, we call upon all political parties to talk and make a voice regarding student issues and to take the issue to the Parliament as well,” Bandara told media at the meeting.
