High Security Zones (HSZ) within Palaly in Jaffna are being withdrawn. Jaffna Commandidng Officer Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe claims it has no impact on security in Jaffna.
The Government has taken a decision to return houses and land owned by the civilians with the scrapping of the High Security Zones in the area. The programme is in place at the behest of the President and the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Accordingly the Jaffna Commanding Officer said that action has been initiated to return to the civilians of Jaffna, 256 houses in the area. Major General Hathurusinghe opined that 2392 houses have been identified for occupation in more that 2500 hectares of land set aside as High Security Zones. The Engineering Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army and the UK Hellow trust Agency have accelerated the removal of mines. He emphasized that the removal of the High Security will not have any threats to the security in Jaffna. He added that the decision made by the Government has further consolidated the trust placed by the civilians in the Government.
