The longest tunnel built in Sri Lanka carrying water from the Upper Kotmale reservoir to the power station will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on November 4. The project would add more than 150 MW of power to the National Grid.
The length and diameter of the tunnel will be 12.9 and 5.2 kilometres respectively. The construction of the Upper Kotmale power plant was delayed due to various reasons. The project gained ground in 2006 under five stages despite various challenges.
Over 74 percent of the work under Phase I of the project has now been completed. The construction within the power plant came under the second stage and over 76 percent of the targets have already been achieved.
The installation of the hydroelectric equipment and 79 percent of the work has been completed and these were done under the third stage of the project. The fourth stage of the project includes the installation of power generators in the plant . Over 54 percent of the fourth stage has already been achieved.
