The Government has decided to counter the unparalleled price escalation of coconuts in the local markets by selling a nut at Rs 25 through the Laksathosa and Co-operative outlets as an immediate relief to consumers.
This follows a meeting of the Ministerial Committee on Food Security and Cost of Living chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees Tuesday afternoon.
The coconuts needed for this program will be supplied by state owned plantation companies through the direct intervention of the Co-operatives and Internal Trade Ministry and the assistance of the CWE.
